SMJK Schools To Upgrade Web Portal to Web 2.0
October 6, 2006
The SMJK schools had given the go ahead for the existing Education Web Portal to be upgraded to a newer version, utilising many of the current Web 2.0 technologies. With this upgrade, the existing Education Web Portal will be upgraded to Perridot Systems’ iSchool portal engine, re-build with Web 2.0 components.
The new Web portal, based on iSchool Portal engine, will have all contents enabled with RSS, where students and teachers can now subscribed and read in their respective School’s SMS desktop, if they choose to enable them.
The new portal will also have both Podcast and Video broadcast capabilities for school to upload their own co-curriculum activities, schools’ own production of multimedia teaching contents or storyboard presentations.
The new portal is expected to be launched in early 2007
School Web Portal Project for SMJK Schools
July 20, 2003
The SMJK Council, a committee representing the 78 conforming secondary schools in Malaysia, had recently obtained a RM100,000 funding from Hua Education Fund, an education foundation headed by Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew. The fund will be used to develop and implement a RM250,000 web portal project for the 78 SMJK Schools.
About SMJK Education Portal
The SMJK Education portal (www.smjk.edu.my) is a specially designed web site for all the 78 SMJK schools in the country. The Education Portal is intended to be the gateway to resources and services for education and training for all the SMJK schools. The portal will help to connect individual teachers, SMJK schools, and the general public through its centralized web database and resources. The portal reaches an estimated 7,000 teachers and approximately 110,000 students in all the SMJK schools. All participating schools will get their own web sites hosted on the portal, managed by the PortalBuilder Content Management System developed by Perridot Systems.
All SMJK teachers for the participating SMJK schools will be provided with email addresses , each with a 20MB mailbox, they can communicate with one another through the portal to share teaching experiences, problems etc.
The ultimate objective of the SMJK web portal is to increase and facilitate access to educational resources in different regions of the country while stimulating professional co-operation to improve the quality of education and learning. This web portal is a pilot one and by no means comprehensive. We need the cooperation of all SMJK users to develop and maintain the SMJK Portal for it to become a full content site for “e-learning”.
The portal provides various tools to create an online community for school directories & contacts, education contents, distance learning, curriculum training, financial aid, test preparation, and career exploration.
Registered users can browse the Online Resource Centre (ORC) which will offer comprehensive on-line materials chosen by teachers to enrich and support teaching and student learning. The ORC will be a free teaching content library that contains hundreds of teaching content which are free for registered users to use on the Internet, providing you are a member of the SMJK community.
