iSchool Directory - Beta launch

We had just soft launch our iSchool Directory, part of the iSchool Suite of product, integrating with Google Maps. The current beta launch is based on an outdated database of 2004, we are still preparing for the database for the approximately 10,000 schools in Malaysia, with more up-to-date info, once they are migrated, you would be able to search for any of the schools in Malaysia. In the current beta implementation, we are using Google Maps API’s geocoder which now supports address geocoding, where we will tag the school to the nearest town, if we do not find the school’s coordinates in our database.

As Google Maps updated the Malaysian Map with their partners, more accurate address geocoding information will be updated, as many of the current maps, especially in major towns, already have the school’s name geocoded.

We will also be coordinating with various parties, including the Malaysian Ministry of Education, to update as many school coordinates as possible, so that we can get all the 10,000 schools tagged with the correct locations.

Google Apps for Education - SMJK Schools

smjk-gmail02-s.jpgThe 78 SMJK Schools in Malaysia, with a total student populations of 128,000 and 7,500 teachers and administrators, is partnering with Google to use Google Apps for Education, which includes Gmail to manage the SMJK student email accounts, as well as Google Calendar and Google Talk.

The new system brings many benefits to the 78 SMJK schools, both teachers and students, including indexed email search, enhanced spam filtering, calendaring, tagging capabilities for tracking emails, and a whopping two-Gigabyte quota per student for email storage.

The SMJK Schools is the first group of schools in Malaysia to implement Google Apps for Education.

Google had given approval to implement up to 200,000 Gmail accounts for the 78 schools

First large-scale deployment of Google Apps for Education in Malaysia

There are approximately 128,000 students and 7,500 teachers and administrators in the 78 SMJK Schools spread throughout the whole of Malaysia, and looking at the new intakes of 20,000 students annually, we would need around 200,000 accounts in the next three years of operations.

From the above requirement, for a total of 200,000 accounts, each with 2GB of mailbox, would make up a total of 400 Terabytes of disk space for the SMJK community.

Perridot Systems (www.perridot.com), an education software provider, had initially proposed to the SMJK Councils to adopt Google’s communication and collaboration tools to the SMJK community in July 2006. The strategic alliances with technology leaders like Google are keys to accelerating the contribution that technology can make to the SMJK community.

The SMJK Schools are always at the forefront of smart use of technology for education, having recently implemented Perridot Systems’ School Management Systems in 62 of the 78 schools in Malaysia in 2006, under an education funding given by Hua Ren Education Foundation.

Perak School Transformed to Interactive Management System

The following news story appeared on the 7th November 2004 edition of the Sunday Star, on the implementation of the RFID e-Attendance system in SMJK Dindings in Lumut, as one of the module for our School Management Systems

LUMUT: From weather-worn wooden huts for classrooms and office buildings, SMJK Dindings in Pundut near here has emerged as one of the most IT-savvy schools in the country. The 52-year-old school is the first to have a fully integrated School Management System using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology that enables it to record, access, report and manage performance records and data of students and staff in real time.An attractive feature of the system, developed by Sibu-based company Perridot Systems, is that it allows parents to track their children’s performance and print out e-report cards.

The school’s principal, Tiong Ting Ming, who initiated and carried out the system after his transfer to the school in 1992, said all these functions could be performed anywhere in the world through the Internet.

“All that is required is the password and one’s username. The system, however, has pre-defined parameters whereby an individual can only access information that is relevant to the person,” he told reporters here during a visit by Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha yesterday. Tiong said the school was also using the system to track library loans, disciplinary records, and as a monitoring tool to record students’ punctuality and whereabouts.

PRACTICAL SOLUTION: Tiong (right) and Kong observing Form Three student Loke Zhao Lin showing how th School Management System allows students to sit for a mock examination on Friday.

“Each student has his own RFID tag. The student is required to scan it at readers within the school to keep track of his movement. The school and parents can confirm what time students arrive and leave, and their attendance at each classroom session,” said Tiong.

He said past and present students of the school had helped set up the system, including wiring up the school buildings with fibre optic cables. “All equipment were either donated or bought second-hand,” he added.

Commending Tiong and the school for their efforts, Kong said having the School Management System had helped to boost the school’s reputation, and enrolment had risen from 320 students in 1992 to about 800 at present.

“The school’s popularity is growing so much so that parents are insisting on sending their children here,” said Kong, who is also Lumut MP. He also urged Perridot Systems and the school to market the management system overseas.

“Software developed in our country are impressive but people have this mindset that they are only good if other countries have used them before.

“Therefore, the trick is to market them overseas first,” he added
